Caption: Sawfish (Pristis pristis) sea unicorn. From a 1620 Edition of Gesner Icones Animalium. An additional print to the earlier editions, after a print by Surgeon Ambrose Pare, in 1582. Pare described the sea unicorn "with a horn on his forehead like a saw, three feet long and a half, and four inches wide, with its two peaks very acute." Earlier Gesner volumes just represent the saw.
