Caption: A fossil hippo tusk, complete with enamel, retrieved from the Thames valley (London). Over half a metre long along the curve, this tooth is probably from the extinct European Hippo (Hippopotamus antiquus). It was part of a European megafauna of animals - including the competing modern common hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) - that existed there when the climate was much warmer during an interglacial 125, 000 to 110, 000 years ago. Hippo remains have even been retreived from Trafalgar square. Such animals would have been known, feared, and possibly hunted by early man.
