Caption: From Guillaume Rondelet's Libri de Piscibus Marinis (Book of Marine Fishes), publishedin 1554. Rondelet's own dissection drawn here showed that the dolphin was a live bearing creature with the foetus in a placenta like land living quadrupeds (mammals). However this did not cause him to put the dolphins with the mammals because the choice of aquatic habitat was seen as their defining feature.
