Caption: New Atlantis is an unfinished novel by Sir Francis Bacon, published in 1627. Bacon described the discovery of a utopia for science and knowledge which expressed his own dreams for humankind. His ideal institution, Solomon's House, prefigured the modern research university in both applied and pure sciences. It has also been seen not just as a stimulation for institutions professing to use Baconian science, but also in the founding of the american colonies and Thomas Jefferson's drafting of the Declaration of Independence.
