Caption: European butterflies on a collector's setting board. Collecting butterflies was a common hobby in Britain and Europe from the 18th to 20th century, as well as widespread for collections in museums. It has now passed out of favour since many species are locally or nationally protected from collection. While rarer species populations have been damaged by over-collection in the past, most conservationists agree that habitat loss and degradation (due to intesive farming, draining, pesticide and herbicide use etc) is ultimately responsible for the rapid population and range reduction in many butterfly species in recent decades.
