Caption: Guillaume Rondelet (1507-1566), French naturalist. Known also as Rondeletus (Rondeletius), he was professor of medicine at the University of Montpellier in southern France and Chancellor of the University between 1556 and his death. An anatomist and a naturalist, his work on marine animals became a standard reference for subsequent generations of Renaisance naturalists. He describes novel facts informed by his own direct observation, as well as propagating some myths (such as the sea monk and sea bishop). This artwork dates from 1566.
