Caption: Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of sticky hairs on the leaf of a sundew (Drosera sp.). Sundews are carnivorous plants that attract insects with glistening globs of sweet sticky liquid. The liquid is borne on long hairs. When the insect lands it becomes stuck, and the hairs and leaves themselves curl around the trapped prey. The plant releases digestive enzymes that break down the insect into vital nutrients, which are not present in the soils in which the sundew grows.
