Caption: Common blue butterfly (Polyommatus icarus). Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of a common blue butterfly, showing its compound eyes (dark, round), antennae (top) and mouthparts (lower centre). Male uppersides are an iridescent lilac blue with a thin black border. Females are usually brown with a row of red spots along the edges and some blue at the base of the wings. Magnification: x27, when printed 10 cm wide.
