Caption: Springtail (Bilobella sp.) body hair. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a hair (long) on the body of a springtail. Springtails are primitive hexapods that are no longer considered to be insects. They have existed unchanged for millions of years, and are considered living fossils. They live mainly in leaf litter, and feed on decaying organic matter. They take their name from their ability to flick their tail downwards, causing them to leap in the air in order to avoid predators. Magnification: x3,330, when printed 10 cm wide.
