Caption: Caddisfly larva. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of a larva from a caddisfly (order Trichoptera), showing its clawed legs that it uses to grasp hold of prey. Caddisflies are moth-like insects that have hairy wings rather than the scaled wings of moths and butterflies. The larvae are voracious aquatic predators that build protective cases (beige, bottom) out of silk and plant debris. Magnification: x13, when printed 10 cm wide.
