Caption: Aedes aegypti mosquito. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a male Aedes aegypti mosquito, showing its compound eyes (purple, upper centre), antennae (feathery, top) and mouthparts (centre). This species of mosquito is found throughout tropical Africa and parts of South America. The female feeds on human blood and is a vector for the transmission of yellow fever, Chikungunya, Dengue fever and zika viruses to humans. However, the male is harmless, feeding only on nectar. Magnification: x57, when printed 10 cm wide.
