Caption: Tychonic world system. 17th-century illustration of the 1570s geo-heliocentric solar system of Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe (1546-1601). This Tychonic system has the Sun, Moon and stars orbiting the Earth (centre), and the planets (Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn) orbiting the Sun. The outer sphere contains the fixed stars. The Latin text refers to Tycho's 'new system of the world', and to his elimination of the 'old Ptolemaic redundancy and inelegance' and the 'recent Copernican physical absurdity'. This page is from the 1603 edition of Tycho's 'De Mundi Aetherei Recentioribus Phaenomenis Liber Secundus', originally published in 1588.
