Caption: MODEL RELEASED. A section of the accelerator mass spectrometer (AMS) in the Oxford Radiocarbon Accelerator Unit, University of Oxford, UK,. The wheel holds small tubes containing samples of purified CO2 derived from the organic material to be dated. The CO2 samples are injected into the AMS where the relative proportions of the carbon isotopes present are measured. As the carbon-14 isotope portion decreases with age, the date when the original plant or animal ceased to absorb it by death or decay, can be measured.

Release details: Model release available. Property release not required.
