Caption: Photomicrograph of the antennae and palps of a midge (family Chironomidae), made in about 1860 with a solar microscope designed by the French photographic inventor and experimenter Auguste-Adolphe Bertsch (1813-1870). He is considered to be a pioneer in photomicrography. Using the sun as the light source, the microscope was able to create efficient bright-field illumination, reducing exposure times. To get images in colour by polarised light Bertsch positioned a polariser above a suitable specimen and the analyser beneath. The size of the midge is reported as 1mm long.
