Caption: Christ healing a leper. 19th century illustration of a biblical scene from Matthew VIII, verses 1-3. Christ is shown in the foreground, raising his hand over a kneeling leper who has asked to be healed. Behind him, the apostles watch. Leprosy is a disfiguring neurological disease. At the time of Jesus it was incurable, and lepers were outcasts. Etching by Emilien Rouargue, 1853.
