Caption: Endometriosis. Laparoscopic image of adhesions and endometriotic lesions (red) affecting the recto-uterine pouch (pouch of Douglas) of a 32-year-old female patient. Endometriosis is a condition in which cells from the lining of the uterus (endometrium) appear and flourish outside the uterine cavity, most commonly on the membrane which lines the abdominal cavity, the peritoneum. Symptoms of endometriosis are pain and infertility. Adhesions are fibrous bands that form between tissues and organs, often as a result of injury during surgery, in a similar way to scar tissue.
