Caption: Subtractive colour mixing. Animation of colours mixing subtractively using cyan (top), magenta (lower left), and yellow (lower right). Each filter allows through two primary (RGB) colours and subtracts (filters) the other one. Cyan subtracts red and passes blue and green. Magenta subtracts green and passes red and blue. Yellow subtracts blue and passes red and green. This means that mixing the three filters produces red (magenta plus yellow), blue (magenta plus cyan), and green (cyan plus yellow). The black colour at centre results from all three filters removing all three of the RGB colours. Subtractive colour mixing is used in printing and with pigments (as opposed to the mixing of light, which results in additive colour mixing). The printing colour scheme is known as CMYK (with K referring to black ink).
