Caption: Colours refracting in a prism. Animation showing the changing refraction across the spectrum of visible colours for light passing through a prism. The refractive index varies for different wavelengths of light. Light with a shorter wavelength is refracted more than light with a longer wavelength. This causes the different coloured light beams hitting the prism to emerge at slightly different angles. Some of the light is also shown being reflected. The colour sequence here is red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. These are the same colours seen in a rainbow.
