Caption: Filtering nitrogen triiodide. Footage of a reaction mixture being passed through filter paper to obtain the brown precipitate nitrogen triiodide (NI3). This was obtained by reacting crystals of iodine with concentrated ammonia. The instability of NI3, an example of a very sensitive contact explosive, is due to the steric strain of three relatively large iodine atoms bound to the relatively small nitrogen atom.
