Caption: Nitrogen dioxide molecule, animation. Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is a triatomic molecule that consists of two oxygen atoms (red spheres) joined to a nitrogen atom (blue sphere). The molecule has resonance hybrid bonding, with a single bond on one side and a double bond on the other, with the resonant structure having 1.5 bonds each side. The bond angle is just over 134 degrees. One of several nitrogen oxides, NO2 is an intermediate in the industrial synthesis of nitric acid, millions of tons of which are produced each year. The reddish-brown toxic gas has a characteristic sharp, biting odour and is a prominent air pollutant.
