Caption: Cannon-fire reaction. High-speed footage of potassium permanganate being added to a flaming mixture of hydrogen peroxide and ethanol in a crucible. The permanganate oxidises the peroxide liberating oxygen gas. The oxygen explosively combusts with the ethanol, forming large flames. In the oxidation reaction, permanganate ions reduce to manganese ions when they gain electrons from hydrogen peroxide molecules which lose electrons and oxidise, forming oxygen gas and protons.
