Caption: Oxidation of gummi candy. Footage of chemists demonstrating the reaction between a piece of gummi confectionery and potassium chlorate. The potassium chlorate is heated in the tube with a blow torch, followed by the addition of the gummi candy. The gummi candy contains a mixture of sugars and proteins. Potassium chlorate is a powerful oxidising agent, and rapidly oxidises the sugar in the gummi candy, generating a lot of heat and producing carbon dioxide and steam.
