Contractile vacuoles act as osmotic regulators, actively expelling excess water from the cell. Paramecium are abundant in water and soil. They move by the rhythmic beating of many hair-like cilia, feeding mainly on bacteria which are digested within temporary vacuoles which float in the cell cytoplasm. Filmed with differential interference contrast illumination.
