Caption: Nematode worm. Light microscope footage of soil-dwelling roundworm Caenorhabditis elegans, caught amongst fungal filaments. C. elegans is used extensively in biological research. It can reproduce by self-fertilisation (resulting in identical offspring), and takes a short time to reach maturity. It is one of the simplest organisms with a nervous system and was the first organism to have its genome sequenced. C. elegans reaches a length of around one millimetre. Filmed with differential interference contrast illumination.
