Caption: Charles Robert Darwin (1809-1882), British naturalist. Montage of images of the life and work of Darwin, including his voyage on HMS Beagle (1831-1836), sketches from his notebooks, the evolution of his ideas, his study at Down House in Kent, the publication of 'The Origin of Species' (1859), the mocking reaction to it, and Darwin's old age. Darwin established that all species of life have descended over time from common ancestors, and in a joint publication with Wallace introduced his scientific theory that this branching pattern of evolution resulted from a process that he called natural selection. He proposed that the struggle for existence has a similar effect to the artificial selection involved in selective breeding.
