Caption: Alois Alzheimer (1864-1915), German neuropathologist and psychiatrist. Montage of images of the life and work of Alzheimer, including brain scans and post-mortem tissue comparisons. In 1906, Alzheimer made a complete clinical and pathological description of pre-senile dementia, which came to be known as Alzheimer's disease, a progressive condition in which nerve cells in the brain degenerate. The montage includes Auguste Deter, a 51-year-old patient at the Frankfurt Asylum who in 1901 was the first person diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. She had strange behavioural symptoms, including a loss of short-term memory. After her death, Alzheimer and his colleagues used staining techniques to identify amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles in the brain tissue.
