Caption: Mars. Animated rotating Mars globe showing 'natural-colour' terrain, beginning in the eastern hemisphere. Mars is a rocky desert world with an atmosphere mostly consisting of carbon dioxide, and surface temperatures well below freezing. The iron oxide on its surface gives it a reddish appearance. It has flat planes, impact craters, and volcanoes, the largest being Olympus Mons which is 24 kilometres high. The Valles Marineris canyon system near the equator is 4000 kilometres long. Footage based on a Mars Global Surveyor camera mosaic.
