Caption: Gravity map of Mars. Animated rotating Mars globe showing the Goddard Mars Model, a map of free-air gravity variation. Irregularities in the surface and sub-surface of Mars produce variations in the gravitational field, which affect the velocity and altitude of orbiting spacecraft. This free-air gravity map was created by studying small variations in the flight paths of Mars Global Surveyor, Mars Odyssey, and Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.
