The elevation map uses data from Mars Global Surveyor's Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter. The free-air gravity map was created by studying variations in the orbits of Mars Global Surveyor, Mars Odyssey, and Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter spacecraft. The crustal thickness map is obtained by subtracting the gravitational effects of the uneven Martian surface from the free-air gravity map, revealing the gravity anomalies caused by underlying material. These gravity anomalies can be explained by variations in the thickness of the crust: local increases in gravity indicate places where the denser mantle is closer to the surface, and hence where the crust is thinner.
