Caption: A raft of black-footed penguins (Spheniscus demersus) preening whilst swimming in shallow waters. Other names for this penguin include the African penguin and the jackass penguin (because of its braying donkey-like call). Penguins are flightless marine birds. This penguin is found in breeding colonies on islands off Namibia and South Africa, and at a few places on the South African mainland. It spends much time at sea, feeding on fish, squid and crustaceans. It breeds and moults on land. It can reach a length of 50 centimetres. The pink patches over the eyes are blood-rich sweat glands that help cool the bird. Filmed on Boulders Beach, South Africa.
