Caption: Maksim Maksimovich Kovalevsky (1851-1916), Ukrainian sociologist. Kovalevsky was born to a noble family and studied in Berlin, Paris, and London, meeting Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, Herbert Spencer, and Vladimir Solovyov among others. He helped revive the Masonic movement in Russia, lectured in law, and became involved in politics, establishing a centrist party of democratic reforms. He was president of the International Institute of Sociology, held a chair in sociology at the Psycho-Neurological Institute and was elected into the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1914.
