Caption: Soviet Phobos lander diagram. Technical drawing of the Phobos lander, designed to land on Mars as part of the Soviet Phobos programme. This was an unmanned space mission consisting of two probes launched by the Soviet Union to study Mars and its moons Phobos and Deimos. Both probes were launched in July 1988, but Phobos 1 failed en route to Mars. Phobos 2 attained Mars orbit, but contact was lost before deployment the lander.
