Lithium. Manufacture of the alkali metal lithium (Li) at a chemicals factory. Lithium has many uses including in mood-stabilizing drugs, heat-resistant glass and ceramics, high strength-to-weight alloys used in aircraft, and lithium batteries. It also has important links to nuclear physics: the splitting of lithium atoms was the first man-made form of a nuclear reaction. It is used as a fuel in nuclear reactors, and in thermonuclear weapons. Photographed at the Novosibirsk Chemical Concentrates Factory, Russia.
