Lunokhod 1 prototype undergoing testing. Lunokhod 1 was the first unmanned rover to land on any celestial body. It was launched by Soviet Union aboard the Luna 17 spacecraft on November 10, 1970. During its 322 days of operations, Lunokhod travelled 10,540 metres, returned many images and performed lunar soil analyses.
