Caption: Interleukin-10. Molecular model of the secondary structure of interleukin-10, a small protein known as a cytokine that plays an important regulatory role in the body's immune system. Like all proteins, interleukin-10 is comprised of amino acids. It is produced by monocytes and lymphocytes. It takes on many roles but its two major activities include inhibition of cytokine production by macrophages and inhibition of the accessory functions of macrophages during T cell activation. This causes it to play mainly an anti-inflammatory role in the immune system.
