Caption: Ceres. Coloured satellite image of the dwarf planet Ceres, showing the difference in materials covering its surface. This clip zooms in to the prominent Occator impact crater, which contains the brightest features on the surface. The brightest white region on the crater floor is called Cerealia Facula, and is thought to be made up of sodium carbonate salt, produced by hydrothermal activity. Ceres is some 945 kilometres in diameter, making it by far the largest body in the asteroid belt. The asteroid belt is a region containing countless small rocky bodies, which lies between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. This image was taken by the Framing Camera on NASA's Dawn space probe, which entered orbit around Ceres on 6th March 2015.
