Enterocutaneous fistula. Close-up of an enterocutaneous fistula, showing the intestine (red, centre) protruding through the abdominal wall. An enterocutaneous fistula is an abnormal link between the bowel and the skin that allows the contents of the intestines to leak through an opening in the skin. The condition is usually corrected surgically. Here, the acidic bowel contents have damaged the surrounding skin (red), causing it to become raw and sore.
