Caption: Light microscopy of the nerve plexus within the muscle wall of the gut viewed with darkfield optics. This neural network is called the myenteric or Auerbach’s plexus and extends from the oesophagus to the large bowel. A number of nerve cell bodies stained black together form a ganglion with the neural fibres (axons, dendrites) showing a golden tint. The myenteric plexus serves to self-regulate motor and sensory nerve actions within the gastrointestinal tract. Magnification x 200 when printed at 10cm.
