Caption: Nuclear waste disposal test site. The underground Exploratory Studies Facility at Yucca Mountain in Nevada, USA, was built by the Department of Energy to determine whether the location was suitable as a deep geological nuclear waste repository. The properties of the local volcanic rock (tuff) and the deep water table made this site ideal, ensuring that the nuclear waste would not be released to the environment over the tens of thousands of years it will be stored here. Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waste Repository was funded from 2002 to 2011, with the current status of the site uncertain. Image published in 2014.
