Caption: R16 protein, coloured scanning electron microscope (SEM). This synthetic protein, developed by BASF, has been modelled on silk proteins as well as the elastic protein resilin found in insects. The protein has high tensile strength and elasticity, while at the same time is biodegradable. Due to skin smoothing properties, the protein may find an application in the cosmetics industry. Magnification: x2920 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
