Caption: Lava lake at Mount Nyiragongo. Footage of the lava lake in the crater of Mount Nyiragongo, an active stratovolcano in the Virunga Mountains of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Nyiragongo (3470 metres) is a large basaltic stratovolcano that is famous for persistent lava lake activity in its huge summit crater. In 2002, lava flows from this volcano destroyed much of the eastern part of the city of Goma, killing around 150 and destroying thousands of homes. Footage obtained in January 2011.
