This animation shows the chemical at a molecular level. The atoms are shown colour-coded: chloride ions (Cl-, green) and sodium ions (Na+, purple). Water molecules are also shown (oxygen, red; hydrogen white). The water molecules are attracted to the ions, and disrupt the crystal lattice and pull the ions away and into solution. The water molecules are polar, with the hydrogen atoms (positive) attracted to the chloride ions (negative) and the oxygen atoms (negative) attracted to the sodium ions (positive).
