The atoms are shown colour-coded: iodine ions (I-, purple) and lead ions (Pb2+, grey). Water molecules are also shown (oxygen, red; hydrogen white). The water molecules are attracted to the ions, but fail to overcome or disrupt the bonds between the lead (II) iodide atoms, and the chemical does not dissolve in the water.
