Caesarean birth. A mother is shown her newborn baby after delivery by Caesarean section. Caesarean births are usually performed when it is either dangerous or impossible to deliver the baby vaginally. Instead, the baby is delivered through a surgical incision in the wall of the mother's abdomen and uterus. Photographed at a unit for pregnant women with cardiovascular disease at Chelyabinsk City Clinical Hospital No.6., Russia, in 2014.
