Caption: Ruins of the Roman amphitheatre in the ancient city of Hierapolis. Hierapolis is located on a high terrace of limestone deposits and mineral water pools, near Pamukkale in Turkey. The city was founded as a thermal spa in 190 BC and the amphitheatre built later, in the second century AD. It was erected under the Roman Emperor Hadrian during the rebuilding of the city following a devastating earthquake in 60 AD.
