Some bacteria produce proteins designed to recognise specific sequences of mRNA. They then bind to the mRNA, preventing it from carrying out its job (repression). mRNA is transcribed from a DNA template, and carries coding information to the sites of protein synthesis. By repressing the mRNA, bacteria can disrupt the production of proteins within cells.
