This tropical parasitic disease is caused by the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi. The symptoms include malaise, fever, oedema of the eyelid and face, and an enlarged liver, spleen, and lymph nodes. The parasites that cause the disease are spread mostly by insects known as Triatominae (kissing bugs or assassin bugs).
