Caption: Dental health film, periodontitis. Animated footage from an educational dental health film, illustrating gum disease and periodontitis. The animation starts with a view of the teeth in the jaw, and zooms in on three teeth and the gum tissues (periodontium) that support them. Bacteria accumulating along the gum line can lead to gum inflammation (periodontitis) and eroded and receding gums. If not treated, the teeth become loose and fall out, as shown at the end of the animation. This animation is from a US military training film, published in the 1940s by the US War Office.
