Caption: Thyroid parafollicular cell, coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM). This section has revealed the cell's nucleus (green). Also called a C-cell, this thyroid cell produces and secretes calcitonin, a hormone that controls blood calcium levels. The parafollicular cells are found in connective tissue (brown) adjacent to the thyroid follicles. They are large and have a cytoplasm (yellow) containing numerous secretory granules (red). Magnification: x5000 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
