Caption: Aurora borealis research. Researcher wearing a pair of polarising glasses to view a computer-generated, virtual-reality simulation of the movement of a charged particle in the Earth's magnetic field. The simulator is used to understand the aurora borealis and to investigate other 'surfatron' plasma behaviours. An offset double image is produced, which allows for 3D viewing with the polarising glasses.
